This has been a very different Spring and Early Summer in a lot of ways. We are still seeing aphids, usually heavy in March were nowhere to be found, Orchid trees, hibiscus, and other tropicals are sloughing foliage like they normally would in mid Spring. Due to the fact that they froze heavily and leafed out late, the process of losing old foliage, there was none, is much delayed. Palm bud worms are showing up inside house. I haven’t seen these in a while. Bud worms are a white grub looking worm with a slight tinge of pink in them. They feed on palm blooms and buds and as the wind blows or the palms get trimmed the worms are displaced. They look for anything fibrous they can to replicate palm fibers to spin their cocoon out of. Drapes, carpet, patio furniture and the like will do for them. Cutter bees are doing their best to make your rose bushes look like Swiss cheese. The nest building bee does no permanent harm to your plant and no treatment is recommended.
Watering practices in extreme heat are a little different. We often tell people when it is over 110 throw your watering schedule out the window. You must check plants almost daily to insure that damage does not occur. With high temps and wind foliage can be damaged very fast. Apply mulches, water very slow and long (hours not minutes) and check soil moisture regularly! We have a great watering guideline called “landscape watering by the numbers” available free in store or you can get it on our website-www.harpersnurseries.com.
Stay tuned as the signs of the monsoon are appearing and that will change what we’re seeing in the garden

As We Continue To Celebrate Our 66th Anniversary This Month:

  • June has surprised us with just a handful of 100 degree days so far
  • We are seeing garden pests normally associated with early spring. Aphids, caterpillars, mites, etc. Be sure to check your garden regularly
  • Fruit and vegetable ripening is somewhat delayed by the cooler weather, but as it does be sure to protect from birds. Netting is the most effective method
  • Summer lawns are a bit slow to green up and the transition from winter to summer lawns is slow. Be sure to mow short, dethatch, and fertilize to speed up the transition.
  • Those dead spots may be poor sprinkler coverage or Pearl Scale. Bring a sample in to us including roots for diagnosis of pearl scale. Check sprinkler heads for coverage. I know from personal experience i generally have to replace a nozzle or two every year.
  • Be sure to paint the trunks of new trees, especially citrus and fruit trees, and those that were pruned severely due to freeze damage. Sun burn will occur and can damage or kill those trees.Go Natural tree paint is my first choice.
  • The most cost effective way to save on cooling bills is by shading windows-Plant A Tree!, How bout planting a tree for Father’s day!
  • Now is the time to convert from grass to xeriscape. Summer is the most effective time to kill grasses as it is actively growing. Harpers can come out and give you a FREE evaluation on how you can change the look of your landscape!

Weekly Landscape Tip:xeriscape

How have you water bills been this summer? I have actually had one month that it exceeded my electric bill! Wow! If you have ever considered converting from turf to xeriscape or low water use landscaping, August and September might actually be the best months to do it. The most difficult part of the process is killing  the existing grass. It can only be done effectively when it is most actively growing. The late summer and early fall months are the most active for bermudagrasses plus as we get into September the grass starts trying to store up nutrients for winter and that makes the uptake of herbicides even more effective.  The use of “glyphosate”,Hi Yield Killzall  type herbicides is a must as they kill the entire plant, root and all. Don’t try to kill the grass by just not watering it. It doesn’t work- and as soon as it rains or you water any of the new plants, you’ll have bermudagrass coming up.  If we can be of any help with any phase of your “conversion” experience-please let us know! Jerry Harper and his team have done many- of all shapes, sizes, and budgets. Give Jerry a call 602 659 5994 to set up a time for a FREE on site evaluation.

4th Of July Gardening-It’s Hot,Hot,Hot…

summer color I have noticed that the annual switch over to summer annual flowers is well under way. I have also seen quite a few plantings of Vinca (periwinkle) that are already pooping out mysteriously. If you are getting ready to switch over please don’t plant Vinca in Beds where Petunias have been planted and vice versa come this fall. I’m not sure that anyone really knows what causes this but it does have to do with the repeated planting of these two favorites over and over again in the same planters.  Repeated planting of these two annuals will eventually result in sudden and sporadic wilt and die off of the newly planted plants. There have been a number of remedies suggested over the years but really the best solution is to rotate plantings and don’t follow Vinca w/ Petunias etc… Luckily for us now there are many alternatives to Vinca for summer plantings. One that is relatively new and has become my favorite is Angelonia or “Summer Snapdragon”. Other choices are Moss Rose, Purple Buddy,Lisianthus,Pentas, and Red or Blue Salvia.  I also rather like using Lantana and Katie Ruellia as a summer annual and just replace it with Geraniums or the great many choices we have in the Fall! No matter the choice it is best to plant in the morning or evenings and water well as you go. Don’t wait till the whole bed is completed or every pot is done water periodically as you plant. This will reduce stress and keep the plants form wilting and get them off to a great start. Be sure to check new plants daily for water and i suggest using a starter fertilizer like Start N Grow by fertilome to really jump start them! We all know it is hot, but nothing makes me feel hotter that empty or dead flowers in pots or planters-Try some of the new offerings like Angelonia or an old faithful like Lantana-you’ll feel COOL,Cool,COOL…

We hope you have a safe and fun 4th of July weekend!! Remember to fly your flag in honor of those who made the Greatest Sacrifice of all to make this the Greatest County of all!!!

Is Your Garden For The Birds?

I don’t know about you, but I didn’t wait all spring for my peaches, tomatoes, and peppers to get ripe for the birds to eat! Those rascals seem to know the exact date, time and hour that things are perfectly ripe don’t they? And couldn’t they at least eat the whole thing-no-they have to sample parts of a bunch of them! Well there are a number of things I’d like to be able to tell you to do about birds but legally I can’t. Really about the only two options are: pick the fruit before it is quite ready or cover your tree/plant/garden with netting or a mesh type cover to keep them out altogether. My friend Rosie says his garden looks like a plant “prison” but if you want the fruit for yourself that is almost what you have to do-or learn to share!
Garden netting comes in different sizes and is very light weight so it can be placed directly on the plants without damaging them. I do recommend, however, that you use stakes or poles to suspend the netting off of the plants or the birds will get everything they can reach through the net. It is also a good idea to take the net clear to the ground or wrap the bottom of the tree or you will have birds getting under the net and then not able to get out-you can imagine what happens then!
So if you want to enjoy the fruits of your labor-send your plants to prison!  If you want to save money on netting-bring in a copy of this page or mention you received the newsletter when you come in and save %20 on garden netting!

Other Things you might want to attend to this weekend!
  • Be sure water system is working properly-it is getting hotter
  • don’t panic if you’re getting some fruit drop on citrus it is normal
  • Fertilize lawns to help transition from winter to summer turf
  • Tune in to 92.3 ktar fm @8am Saturdays for more tips
