As We Continue To Celebrate Our 66th Anniversary This Month:

  • June has surprised us with just a handful of 100 degree days so far
  • We are seeing garden pests normally associated with early spring. Aphids, caterpillars, mites, etc. Be sure to check your garden regularly
  • Fruit and vegetable ripening is somewhat delayed by the cooler weather, but as it does be sure to protect from birds. Netting is the most effective method
  • Summer lawns are a bit slow to green up and the transition from winter to summer lawns is slow. Be sure to mow short, dethatch, and fertilize to speed up the transition.
  • Those dead spots may be poor sprinkler coverage or Pearl Scale. Bring a sample in to us including roots for diagnosis of pearl scale. Check sprinkler heads for coverage. I know from personal experience i generally have to replace a nozzle or two every year.
  • Be sure to paint the trunks of new trees, especially citrus and fruit trees, and those that were pruned severely due to freeze damage. Sun burn will occur and can damage or kill those trees.Go Natural tree paint is my first choice.
  • The most cost effective way to save on cooling bills is by shading windows-Plant A Tree!, How bout planting a tree for Father’s day!
  • Now is the time to convert from grass to xeriscape. Summer is the most effective time to kill grasses as it is actively growing. Harpers can come out and give you a FREE evaluation on how you can change the look of your landscape!

June Garden Checklist
Time to feed the trees that feed you. Citrus, fruit trees, berries, grapes, etc should be fertilized this month with Organo Citrus Food.
Mulch and then mulch some more. Keep the roots of your plants cool, cut down on weeds, and use less water-need any more reasons to do it!
Protect the trunks of newly planted citrus trees, fruit trees, ficus, ash and any other tree that do not have “bark”. Use Go Natural tree paint for best results!
Start fertilizing summer lawns monthly with “All Seasons” or Fertilome lawn food!
Be sure you are adjusting your watering schedule to reflect the changing weather. Check out our website for a guide on watering and how to develop a watering schedule.Go To www.harpersnurseries.com “garden tips” “landscape watering guide for Arizona”
Check for spider mites, caterpillars, aphids, grape leaf skeletonizers…..We are seeing a lot of insects that normally would be evident earlier in the spring. Due to the cooler temps perhaps the appearance of the critters has been delayed. If you are unsure what you have, bring in samples for proper i.d. and prescribed treatment.
Be sure to follow us on facebook or check our Blog on our website for daily postings and happenings!
Be sure to listen to The Harper Garden Hour of the Rosie on the House show every Saturday morning at 8am. Tune your dial to 92.3 fm and catch the tip of the week. Got Shade?

The tip this week on the Harper’s Garden Segment of the Rosie On The House show, which is on at 8am on 92.3fm KTAR is: planting shade trees. The single most effective tool to lower your a/c bill is to shade windows and walls. The easiest and most environmentally friendly way to do that is to plant trees,or vines, or both. Using a good planting soil like Organo Omni will insure your tree gets off to a great start. It will also qualify you for the Harper’s LIEFETIME PLANT GUARANTEE!  If you Bring in this tip or mention you heard it on the show you’ll receive 20% OFF Organo Omni. Harpers is also having a sale this weekend on shade trees, the are %20 OFF as well!! Got Shade? Get some this weekend and Save! . Clicking on the link below will allow you to print the coupon for Omni!See you on the radio at 8 and in the garden later on-Good Growin’.
