Pickin’ Maters Yet?

If you planted your tomatoes in early February you might just be picking some fruit by now! If not perhaps a couple of things have gone south on you!

  • Pollination, are you getting blossoms and no fruit? If so the bees may not be doing their job. Try using a tomato or pepper set spray. They do work and are completely safe. Be sure you’re plants are in a place where some wind can get to them as well!
  • You may be getting fruit but they have an ugly black patch on the bottom of them? We are starting to see “blossom end rot” on tomatoes. This is generally a calcium deficiency, but stress from irregular watering and fertilizing may add to the trouble. Fertilome makes a spray ” yield booster and blossom end rot preventer” it is worth a try! Many people throw the tomatoes away when this happens as well. You can cut off the damage and still use the fruit!
  • Fertilize,Fertilize,Fertilize….Tomatoes as well as other “annuals” need to grow fast and keep growing until they are “done”. Be sure you are fertilizing regularly. Follow directions on the product you’re using, most folks don’t use the product nearly as frequently as they need to and using more is not good. Better to feed lightly and often than risk overfeeding and burning plants!
  • Water,Mulch,Shade: as the temps warm up be sure to adjust your watering schedule, don’t panic, however, if plants wilt in the heat of the afternoon. Adding a layer of compost or mulch to the ground around your plants will help them cool off as well. If you really want to extend the season build a shade structure over your garden. Don’t use cloth more dense than about 50% and be sure it doesn’t  touch the plants!!
  • Birds-Dang em’. Using a netting or chicken wire is really about the only effective solution!

A Big Week For Goin’ Green!

In the next week or so two “holidays” will be observed that our industry and Harper’s take part in on a daily basis. This coming Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day. Earth Day was started on April 22nd 1970 by then Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson. Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. Many a tree, shrub, and garden have been planted in observance and hopefully many will continue to be.

A week from Friday, April 27th is Arbor Day in Arizona. Arbor Day started by Nebraska settler J.Sterling Nelson on April 10,1872. Nelson missed his Michigan forest and trees were needed for shade, wind breaks, and to reduce soil erosion (all great reasons to plant today!) in the early days of Nebraska. So enamored by trees and their beauty and benefit Nelson pushed to have an “official” day put in place for the celebration of planting trees.

Harper’s and the nursery industry in Arizona have begun a campaign called “Just Plant Something”. A modern day revival of both these days I suppose. We hope you’ll partake every day in the cause of making our planet a more beautiful place, we do. We will be having some special events over the next week to help celebrate the “official” dates.

So whether you want to improve your life with shade or fruit trees or you want to eat healthier Harper’s will try and help you in your endeavor to “GO GREEN”. It is what we do every day!

Donna DiFrancesco, the water specialist for the city of Mesa will be calling in to the Rosie On The House Show at 8:30 or so on Saturday am. Tune in to 92.3 fm KTAR to hear Donna an other Earth/Arbor Day ideas!

Harper’s Weekly Tip: Too Much Leaf Drop?

If you have any amount of trees or shrubs in your yard you have probably noticed, especially with the wind we’ve been having, a lot of leaves turning yellow and falling to the ground. Some Springs seem to be more significant than others, but it is very common for citrus, oleander, hibiscus, orchid, live oak, jacaranda….to slough off lots of foliage as they begin to bloom and put on a flush of new spring growth. This process must happen for “evergreen” trees and shrubs at some point during the growing season, some do it throughout, in order for old growth to be replaced by new. I can tell you that my back patio is a mess with citrus blossoms and leaves right now! The flip side is ,however, is my citrus trees are the prettiest now of any time of year. There is nothing like that shiny new green foliage as it envelops the whole canopy of the tree. Making sure your trees and shrubs are properly fertilized will minimize this process and insure that new growth comes on fast and full. We recommend Organo and Fertilome brand fertilizers. They are developed for our growing conditions and have formulas that best suite how we plant here in the desert.

Be sure to tune in Saturday at 8am to 92.3fm KTAR to hear more about this tip and other products. As always if you print off the coupon you can bring it in for a 20% discount on any one Gro Well product at Harper’s! Good Growin’

Harper’s Weekly Tip-Watch Your Bottom!

That is right, watch the bottom-of the tomato that is! Hopefully you have lots of fruit starting to set on your tomato plants now. If and when you do, one thing we have problems with during our warm dry springs is “blossom end rot”. Nothing is more frustrating than going to pick a nice big red juicy tomato and having the bottom or end of it all spoiled. Blossom end rot is generally caused by a calcium deficiency and or irregular watering plus stress. Be sure to fertilize your plants and water them in a very regular pattern. Tomatoes love to grow fast and slow down periods in the growth and fruit development may contribute to this problem. You can also apply a product by fertilome called Yield Booster and Blossom End Rot Preventer. It is easy to apply, just spray on the plant regularly. This liquid calcium product seems to work great for preventing and or minimizing the frustration of blossom end rot. Remember also that the end rot doesn’t necessarily spoil the whole fruit. You can still pick and use the unaffected parts of the tomato so all is not lost if you do end up with a bit of this condition! Good Growin and stay tuned Saturday am at 8 for more on tomatoes and what is going on “in The Garden” during Rosie On The House on 92.3fm KTAR.

Garden Tip Of The Week: Wanna Save Some Time?

There are not very many ways to save time and still have a great garden/landscape. There is one, however, and it is time to do it now. The application of preemergent herbicides to especially granite areas twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring can save you lots of time, blister, kneeling, etc…We feel preemergent herbicides are a much better alternative to using lots of post emergent sprays as well. If you want to stay organic you can. Corn gluten makes a good natural pre emergent. A product we like very much is “dimension”. One of the reasons for our affection is that it controls spurge. Spurge has become a huge nuisance in the last few years and the absolute best way to control it is to not let it get started. Spurge grows fast, has lots of seeds and spreads like crazy even when you are trying to pull it up!
Want to spend more time having fun and enjoying your garden (don’t know anyone who enjoys pulling weeds), use preemergent herbicides now!!
Remember to click on the coupon and bring it in for a 20% discount this weekend!!
