THE START OF FALL GARDENING
square foot gardenLabor day is the traditional start of the fall season around the country. No where else does it really have such an impact as here in the desert. Soon it will cool off and we liken it to “Spring” in many parts of the country. We have had our most severe season (most places that is winter) and as it begins to cool people can come out and enjoy the outdoors again-kind of “cabin fever” in reverse!  We have just had a record setting August for heat and January had some record or historic cold weather. Interesting that our last hard freeze was in 2007 and the records we broke in August for number of 110 plus days was set in 2007?  The extremes at both ends are really tough on plants. You plants probably need fertilized more than ever to help them stay healthy and or recover from a darn tough late summer. High temps not much rainfall or even cloudy days to give them a break has taken its toll on a lot of plans, trees, and vines. We have a great long mild Fall season that really helps plants recover before our “cold” season hits in December or January. Be sure to take advantage of our DEALS on fertilizer this weekend to help kick start your plants on the road to recovery!

This is also the first really big “get the garden ready” for fall  weekend. Your fall garden soil preparation is vital to success. Whether it flowers or vegetable, in ground beds or above ground, pots or square foot garden kits, the soil has been baked and abused by high temps and salty water.  Check out our garden preparation guide “the recipe” and the savings we have on our package and or Square Foot Garden Soil!! Most people’s fall gardens fail due to planting too early and without properly preparing the soil, don’t make that mistake. Stock up this weekend on Omni, Mel’s mix and save your way to success!!

We hope you have a safe and enjoyable Holiday weekend! We also hope we can help you get your plants and gardens back in shape and ready for a successful Fall gardening season! We’ll see you in the garden!!

JUST PLANT SOMETHING

A slogan you will be seeing and hearing a lot about in the coming weeks,”Just Plant Something“. The Arizona Nursery Association has developed a campaign to promote the benefit of plants, especially those grown and sold here in Arizona. We hope over the next months and years that the tag line “just plant something” will be to the plant and gardening industry what “got milk” and “beef, it’s what’s for dinner” has been to dairy and beef producers. So remember if you’re tired of those high utility bills-just plant something. If you don’t like the view of the motor home in your neighbor’s side yard-just plant something. You’d like to spend more time outside by the pool, but it’s not that appealing-just plant something……..you’ll get the idea, we hope!!

Is Your Patio Looking Pooped?
patio options A number of folks have been in the last few days with a common theme-looking for a couple of things to spruce up the patio or entry for a party, or they’ve been gone on vacation and things didn’t do well while away, or they’re just tired of the summer weary look all around them and need to freshen up! These last few weeks of Summer can be a little frustrating that way-you can see the light at the end of the tunnel (fall flower selections will be here in a few weeks) but you’d like to do something now. What can you do that will look good for at least a few weeks and still have some value later on. We’ve got some great ideas. How about Hibiscus, Torch Glow Bougainvillea, Sweet Potato Vine, Katie Ruellia, Hearts and Flowers, Purple Heart, or a combination of all of the above. They are all proven hot weather performers, will either bloom or provide dramatic foliage color, and you can use them in other places in the garden this fall or work your fall geraniums or bedding plants right in with them. You can plant and enjoy them now in a container or a planting area and continue to enjoy them in those same or different areas come Fall-Just Plant Something!!

DOUBLE LOYALTY POINT TIME RUNNING DOWN
sweet potato vine Just a reminder that double loyalty points or “punches” ends on Labor Day. That is sneaking up on us and is only a little over 2 weeks away! In case you’re not familiar with our loyalty program: you receive a punch for every $40 in purchases ( 2 punches from Memorial Day till Labor Day). When you get 10 punches you receive a $40 gift card to spend at Harper’s. So hurry in- new garden seeds have arrived, it is time to start fertilizing, I’ll bet you have some weeds to kill, and don’t forget about those great patio plant ideas-Just Plant Something and get double punches for two more weeks!!

If you’re ready to plant and think it is still too hot, have no fear-WE GUARANTEE OUR PLANTS!! If you purchase the necessary planting amendments or have us plant for your, your one gallon and larger plants are guaranteed for their normal LIFE expectancy! So go forth boldly and “just plant something” or let us plant something for you-WE GUARANTEE YOU’LL LOVE IT!!!

Sincerely,

The Harper Boys

What Is So Special About Wednesday?

We’ve turned Wednesdays from being ho hum into a special day at Harpers. The biggest reason why is Ladies and Seniors get 10% OFF every Wednesday. You all also receive double loyalty points. You didn’t know we had a loyalty program? Here is how it works. For every $40 you spend you receive a hole punch in your card. When the card is full (10 punches) you receive a $40 gift card to Harpers. On Wednesdays Ladies and Srs receive double punches year round. As a reminder, however, everyone is receiving double punches for a couple more weeks-until Labor Day!

As of this morning we still don’t have a winner to our Tuesday “name that plant” contest.  So here are a couple more hints: This plant has a couple of relatives that are mainstays in the landscape. One of them is British and the other is Baja. I already mentioned it had a cousin named “katy” and it is a ground cover. Hope that helps!! Good luck and Good Growin’.

P.S. we do have these Hibiscus in stock-aren’t they great!
