I’m sure everyone is as tired of Summer and heat as we are. This is always an interesting newsletter to put out because you can finally really start talking about getting ready for Fall gardening! As we are writing this, a fork lift is unloading a truck load of mulch, compost, garden soil, rye grass seed, fertilizer , and all the goodies you’d need to get a Fall garden started. Some of our new garden seeds have arrived, and bulbs and onion sets will be here the week of the 12th-not that far away. We hope your Summer was enjoyable, and you were able to get out of the heat for a bit, but now it is time to start getting ready for that glorious Fall garden season. We are and we hope you will be soon. See you in the garden-Good Growin’.

LATE SUMMER GARDEN CHECKLIST

    • Great Fall gardens begin with proper soil preparation. It is time to start turning the soil, adding organic compost, fertilizer, gypsum, etc. We have a free garden recipe if you’d like come on in and pick it up. Please don’t plant until you’ve prepared the soil!
    • If you have prepared: start planting beans, corn, cucumber, melons, and squash seeds.
    • The list above triples in two weeks and some starts will be available as well.
    • Fertilize citrus, and  tropicals like hibiscus and bougainvillea while the weather is still warm.
    • Fertilize your lawn for the last time if you overseed for the winter. If you don’t plant a winter lawn, continue to fertilize monthly until October or November.
    • Be on the watch for critters. Caterpillars, mealy bugs, spider mites, and yes even some aphids are very present on ornamentals, grape vines, and your remaining summer veggies like squash. If you cant i.d. or want a suggested treatment, please catch a few and bring them in!
    • Control weeds and unwanted grass while it is young and growing fast. If you want to convert your grass lawn to xeriscape or rock, now is the best time to kill bermudagrasses. Weeds will start going to seed as the weather cools so get rid of them now! Again bring them in for proper i.d. and treatment.
    • The Monsoon is probably not quite over yet so take a look at your trees and make sure they are pruned properly and there are no precarious limbs that could cause a problem in the next storm. Young trees should be properly double staked to prevent wind damage as well.

Plant Something!
Plant Something If your utility bills are too high, you need a fresh look or better curb appeal, or a place to hang that hammock or swing for the grand kids-now is the time to plant something. Harper’s can help you plan an entire yard, or place a single tree in the correct spot to make sure that you get the full impact and value of each plant, vine or tree! Fall is the absolute best time to plant in our part of the state. Whether you need shade or impact or a nice secluded quite spot-Call us and We’ll Plant Something Together!! You can call Jerry Harper direct at 602 659 5994 or come by and visit us at either location. Remember Harper’s offers a LIFETIME PLANT GUARANTEE if we plant or install or if you do it yourself and purchase all the necessary planting amendments!!

.

Fall shipments are arriving and we’re looking forward to seeing all of you soon. We hope we can help make your fall gardening season successful, fun, and enjoyable!!
Sincerely,

JUST PLANT SOMETHING

A slogan you will be seeing and hearing a lot about in the coming weeks,”Just Plant Something“. The Arizona Nursery Association has developed a campaign to promote the benefit of plants, especially those grown and sold here in Arizona. We hope over the next months and years that the tag line “just plant something” will be to the plant and gardening industry what “got milk” and “beef, it’s what’s for dinner” has been to dairy and beef producers. So remember if you’re tired of those high utility bills-just plant something. If you don’t like the view of the motor home in your neighbor’s side yard-just plant something. You’d like to spend more time outside by the pool, but it’s not that appealing-just plant something……..you’ll get the idea, we hope!!

Is Your Patio Looking Pooped?
patio options A number of folks have been in the last few days with a common theme-looking for a couple of things to spruce up the patio or entry for a party, or they’ve been gone on vacation and things didn’t do well while away, or they’re just tired of the summer weary look all around them and need to freshen up! These last few weeks of Summer can be a little frustrating that way-you can see the light at the end of the tunnel (fall flower selections will be here in a few weeks) but you’d like to do something now. What can you do that will look good for at least a few weeks and still have some value later on. We’ve got some great ideas. How about Hibiscus, Torch Glow Bougainvillea, Sweet Potato Vine, Katie Ruellia, Hearts and Flowers, Purple Heart, or a combination of all of the above. They are all proven hot weather performers, will either bloom or provide dramatic foliage color, and you can use them in other places in the garden this fall or work your fall geraniums or bedding plants right in with them. You can plant and enjoy them now in a container or a planting area and continue to enjoy them in those same or different areas come Fall-Just Plant Something!!

DOUBLE LOYALTY POINT TIME RUNNING DOWN
sweet potato vine Just a reminder that double loyalty points or “punches” ends on Labor Day. That is sneaking up on us and is only a little over 2 weeks away! When you get 10 punches you receive a $40 gift card to spend at Harper’s. So hurry in- new garden seeds have arrived, it is time to start fertilizing, I’ll bet you have some weeds to kill, and don’t forget about those great patio plant ideas-Just Plant Something and get double punches for two more weeks!!

If you’re ready to plant and think it is still too hot, have no fear-WE GUARANTEE OUR PLANTS!! If you purchase the necessary planting amendments or have us plant for your, your one gallon and larger plants are guaranteed for their normal LIFE expectancy! So go forth boldly and “just plant something” or let us plant something for you-WE GUARANTEE YOU’LL LOVE IT!!!

The best way for any living thing to stay healthy and endure or recover from stress is a balanced and nutritious diet. This goes for you plants as well as you! As our long hot summer comes winding down, slowly i realize. It is important for your plants to have the energy to grow some new foliage and or be able to store up nutrients to get through the upcoming winter. Many plants may have been stressed by the heat and need to replace damaged foliage. We have a unique climate in the fact that our Fall is long and warm and plants have a chance to recover before the cold weather sets in. Be sure and fertilize almost everything in your yard or landscape this month, for sure before mid to late September to take advantage of the growing season still ahead. We recommend both ferti-lome and organo products as they are formulated for our growing conditions and have long track records here of working very well for gardeners. Both companies have products designed especially for the type of plants your are growing from vegetables to lawns to trees. Perhaps you’ll even get lucky and fertilize right before a good monsoon storm!
growell coupon Weekly Garden Doings:
We have been observing the following problems/opportunities in the garden this week:

  • Worms and or caterpillars on bougainvillea. Use Thuricide or spinosad for best and safest control.
  • Spurge-and lots of it in lawns and even gravel areas. Fertilome weed out is great for killing the existing crop. Hi Yield “dimension” however is a must to prevent any further infestations.
  • Leaf hoppers on grapes and assorted plants. They can do extensive damage quickly-again our favorite is “spinosad“.
  • With some parts of the valley getting a couple of good rains this past week-sorry Mesa!-be on the lookout for mushrooms, toadstools, and other fungi to appear in lawns and gardens where wet organic material may exist. Adjust watering schedules if necessary and use soil sulfur as well as a general fungicide when necessary. Be sure to not run over mushrooms with your lawn mower as that might spread them! Hand pick them and put into a trash bag.
  • Prevent heat stress on roses, citrus and others by mulching!!
  • Start the Fall Garden process-Be sure soil is well prepared with plenty of organic matter, gypsum, and organic fertilizer first. Pumpkins, corn, beans, squash and a few others can be planted as soon as you’re ready-go to our website for a complete planting calendar! www.harpersnurseries.com

June Garden Checklist
Time to feed the trees that feed you. Citrus, fruit trees, berries, grapes, etc should be fertilized this month with Organo Citrus Food.
Mulch and then mulch some more. Keep the roots of your plants cool, cut down on weeds, and use less water-need any more reasons to do it!
Protect the trunks of newly planted citrus trees, fruit trees, ficus, ash and any other tree that do not have “bark”. Use Go Natural tree paint for best results!
Start fertilizing summer lawns monthly with “All Seasons” or Fertilome lawn food!
Be sure you are adjusting your watering schedule to reflect the changing weather. Check out our website for a guide on watering and how to develop a watering schedule.Go To www.harpersnurseries.com “garden tips” “landscape watering guide for Arizona”
Check for spider mites, caterpillars, aphids, grape leaf skeletonizers…..We are seeing a lot of insects that normally would be evident earlier in the spring. Due to the cooler temps perhaps the appearance of the critters has been delayed. If you are unsure what you have, bring in samples for proper i.d. and prescribed treatment.
