If you haven’t quite gotten into the swing of things around the house, perhaps we can help get you going. Here is a list of things you should or could be doing in the garden right now!

Pruning Rose Bushes-Don’t know where to start-Our annual rose clinic is a week from Saturday, January 21st at 10am.
Planting new roses. The best selection is now!

Start Planting Berries,Grapes,Figs,and other deciduous fruit trees and vines.
Fertilize Winter Lawns
Apply Pre emergent herbicides
Continue to plant winter type vegetables, root and leaf crops
Plant winter hardy trees and shrubs
Control newly sprouted weeds while they are young and before they go to seed.
Spruce things up w/ winter color. After the decorations are down, a few pots of blooming Geraniums,Pansies,Petunias,Salvia and the like can get things “colored” up again!
Start getting space and ground ready for Tomato and Pepper plantings-just around the corner.
Keep that winter flower bed or vegetable garden well fertilized and growing fast.

Fall/Winter annual and perennials arriving for planting now:Petunias,Geraniums,Alyssum,Lobelia,Snapdragons…as the weather cools, more and more varieties come on line. Be sure your soil is well prepared and use Starter Fertilizer to insure quick growth!!
Winter lawn installation: For tips on how to install:
Tips For Planting A Lawn
If your lawn is planted and growing be sure to fertilize after 2nd mowing! Use 21-7-14 fertilizer for best cool season results
Watch for caterpillars on your winter leafy vegetables, Geraniums, Passion vines…If you see lots of pretty butterflies around-get ready!! Use
b.t. thuricide, dipel dust or spinosad for best and safest results .
ADJUST YOUR WATERING SCHEDULES!!!We are seeing lots of over-watered plants right now-although it has been warmer than normal it is nowhere near as warm as it was this summer. You can probably cut your watering about 50% from where it was at the peak of summer!

Dwarf Citrus Have Arrived
Another sign that Fall is here and it is time to plant-Our Fall shipment of dwarf citrus is in! From Navel Oranges to Kafir Limes, the selection is fantastic. Dwarf Citrus are the perfect size tree for most back yards and patios-you’ll never have to worry about how and when to prune citrus-one of our most asked questions-if you plant a tree that fits the space more correctly!

The Weekend Continues…For Some! Thanks Chris!

In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue….And today we celebrate him who thought the world not flat! Speaking of flat, who is your yard. I got out there myself yesterday and have a big pile of stuff in the back of my truck this morning. Now that the trimming and pulling out of dead stuff is complete I’m ready to plant, how bout you?

We’re open normal hours today 8-5:30, so if you’re weekend continues we’d love to help you fill in some of the holes you may have created yesterday, or help you figure out how much ryegrass seed you need for the winter lawn. Perhaps a vegetable garden is in order, we have two different square foot garden box kits you might want to check out and lots of Mel’s Mix to get the plants started off right! We seem to have a love hate relationship with this plant.These guys, or I guess they could be gals also, are another sign that summer is coming to an end and fall is upon us.  Some landscapes just love to carve them into ridiculous shapes and keep them from putting on their late summer and fall show!! That might have been too much of a hint, but I just witnessed some being pruned and I’m mad!!!! Have fun-Good Growin’.

Is Your Landscape or Garden An Investment?

We had a caller to the Garden Segment of the Rosie On The House Show last week asking “how she could save her 35 year old plant”. This is not that unusual a call or question.  My question, is what is the real value of that plant or the entire landscape, and what do you expect from your landscape?  I am perplexed that folks would spend many times what the replacement value and certainly the original purchase price of the plant in fertilizers, soil additives, magic potions, etc to try and save or “resurrect” the plant. Usually my question back to them is how long do they expect their dishwasher, water heater, refrigerator, etc to last. These much more expensive household products last nowhere near as long as most plants. We  generally have no issue coming to the decision that replacement or remodeling is the right move vs. repair. So perhaps we need to change the way we look at our outdoor living space, especially in light of the current economy. Your landscape is the first thing you see when you pull up to your house, it may be the last thing you see when you leave. How does it make you feel when you come home? How does your neighbor across the street feel when they walk out their door every morning? For what can be a very small “investment” you can change the look and feel of your entire home. In the case of the caller mentioned, one $35 plant may have give the look of her home a whole new feel. Certainly for much less than a kitchen or bath remodel you can give your whole front and back yard a whole new and refreshing look. A properly placed tree can save you money on your utility bill and you might just like your yard so much that staying home instead of taking an expensive vacation to some exotic resort would be just the ticket for the old retirement fund! My guess is you’ll be a whole lot more popular with the neighbors as well!
I would challenge you to really take a look around you this fall and objectively evaluate what your landscape looks like. Is it everything you want it to be? Does it improve the value of your home or your lifestyle? Do you have a garden or just a “yard”. Harper’s and the Arizona Nursery Association are joining together to promote the benefits of plants. We’d love to help you make the answer to the above questions a resounding YES!. Ahhhh The Feel Of Fall!!

What a nice break in the weather. This is a good sign that our famous Fall weather is not too far away!  We hope you enjoyed the weekend and got out and started looking around your yard. I did and I have a huge list of to dos now! I noticed a lot of plants that normally make it through the Summer just fine have really suffered and are in need of pruning and fertilizing, and some will just have to be replace. If we can help you in the analysis of your landscape please let us know. Some plants, even though they look awful, may be just fine-and some, well, they’re going to have to be pruned with a shovel.
