JUST PLANT SOMETHING

A slogan you will be seeing and hearing a lot about in the coming weeks,”Just Plant Something“. The Arizona Nursery Association has developed a campaign to promote the benefit of plants, especially those grown and sold here in Arizona. We hope over the next months and years that the tag line “just plant something” will be to the plant and gardening industry what “got milk” and “beef, it’s what’s for dinner” has been to dairy and beef producers. So remember if you’re tired of those high utility bills-just plant something. If you don’t like the view of the motor home in your neighbor’s side yard-just plant something. You’d like to spend more time outside by the pool, but it’s not that appealing-just plant something……..you’ll get the idea, we hope!!

Is Your Patio Looking Pooped?
patio options A number of folks have been in the last few days with a common theme-looking for a couple of things to spruce up the patio or entry for a party, or they’ve been gone on vacation and things didn’t do well while away, or they’re just tired of the summer weary look all around them and need to freshen up! These last few weeks of Summer can be a little frustrating that way-you can see the light at the end of the tunnel (fall flower selections will be here in a few weeks) but you’d like to do something now. What can you do that will look good for at least a few weeks and still have some value later on. We’ve got some great ideas. How about Hibiscus, Torch Glow Bougainvillea, Sweet Potato Vine, Katie Ruellia, Hearts and Flowers, Purple Heart, or a combination of all of the above. They are all proven hot weather performers, will either bloom or provide dramatic foliage color, and you can use them in other places in the garden this fall or work your fall geraniums or bedding plants right in with them. You can plant and enjoy them now in a container or a planting area and continue to enjoy them in those same or different areas come Fall-Just Plant Something!!

Landscape Got The Blahs?

August can be a tough time of year to get excited about much in the landscape. It can also be a tough time to find much excitement in the nursery or garden center to spruce things up for a few weeks. We only have a little over a month and the fall/winter color selections will start rolling out ( our first geranium cuttings will arrive next week). So what can you do right now that can give you some value and impact. Try mixing sweet potato vine with lantana as in this picture or gazania or katie ruellia or all 3.  The pots will look great, last the rest of summer, and beyond if you’d like and when the new geraniums come out you can replant these in a flower bed or landscape if you want to keep them going! Have A Great Weekend and Good Growin’.

Let The Weekend Begin!

Hard to believe this is the last weekend of July! Well I don’t know about you but I am always glad to see this month in my rear view mirror! Not that I want time to pass any faster but if I could eliminate one month of the year, July would be it!  That being said, Fall gardening is just around the corner. Have you looked around your yard lately? Take note of what has performed well and what you may want to reconsider for next year. Get your old vegetable garden cleaned up and start preparing the soil for fall veggies. We just place our Fall seed order and the new arrivals should be here soon. You can start planting pumpkins, corn, beans, and some squash now! If your lawn has struggled this summer, most have, now would be a great time to fertilize again ( they are calling for some rain and that is a great time to get fertilizer down ahead of). I know these are the “Dog Days” of summer but it is winding down and there are lots of things you can start doing again out in the garden. Good Growin’

Get Ready To Plant!
July is nearly over and yes it is still hot, but there are certain things that if you’re going to be successful this fall, you need to start doing now. Soil preparation is the key. Many folks think that once you’ve done it you’re good to go season after season. Do you remember what the soil looked like when you were done prepping it last time? Dark brown to black in color, moist, and without clods. I’d bet a steak dinner it doesn’t look like that now. Start by adding plenty of organic compost. Make your own or use OMNI and use plenty we recommend 6 bags per 100 square feet. Add gypsum or sulfur and some organic fertilizer or fertilome start and grow. Be sure to follow instructions on coverage. Once you’ve tilled these materials in to at least 8 inches, removed any clods, rocks, etc. you’re good to go. It should look as i previously described. It doesn’t hurt to re till and water and repeat a couple of times before you plant! You can find this recipe and a schedule of  planting dates on our website(www.harpersnurseries.com) or FREE in the store.

Tips(s) Of The Week

. Check Trees for proper staking as the monsoon storms are far from over. Be sure to use Arbor guards on trees planted in turf to prevent girdling from string trimmers. This is also

our weekly tip on Rosie On The House. Click on or print the coupon out and bring it in for a 20% savings on Arbor Guards! Be sure to tune in every Saturday at 8am to the  Garden Hour of the Rosie On The House  Show on KTAR 92.3fm

. As mentioned in detail above, get soil prepared now: you can plant from seed now-Pumpkins,Corn,Beans,Winter Squash, and a second crop of Melons.

.  We have been receiving reports about caterpillars on Bougainvilleas of all things! Whether they are on Bougies or Grape Vines,Passion Vine, etc. Thuricide or Spinosad are the most effective and  safest.

.  Control Weeds while they are young. Spurge in  really growing fast and furious now. Use Weed Out plus Q and to be sure it doesn’t come back “Dimension” as a pre emergent. Dimension keeps the seeds from being able to regrow and will give you control for 3-6 months.

. Keep lawns fertilized every 30 days. Fertilome lawn food plus iron works great this time of year!

.  Now is the best time to convert from grass to a Xeriscape type landscape. The Bermuda grass lawns are easier to kill now than any other time of the year. If you’re considering a “conversion” or any landscape project, give Jerry Harper a call to set up an appointment for a FREE evaluation of your landscape. You can reach Jerry at 602 659 5994.

Continue hot weather treatments to trees and shrubs: wrap or paint young tree trunks, and add mulch to planter beds, roses, and fruit trees.

. Trim and plant or transplant palms now. This is the best time of year!

.  Hang On! Fall is just around the corner-Good Growin’

It is really hard to believe that July is nearly over and school and football are about to start, but that does mean that our lovely Fall weather is just around the corner. The best part of that is we’ll be seeing some of you again. It gets kind of lonely around her in July! Remember that August is the last month for double loyalty points-they end Labor Day!

Plant Ol’ Reliable!

For sure fire summer color sometimes you just can’t beat the tried and true! We have always considered lantana a landscape shrub, but no longer. With the advent of newer colors and smaller growth habits ie: red, gold mound… the old reliable lantana has a new resurrected life as a hot weather annual. Whether you’re doing pots or flower beds it is showy, has a variety of colors from white to red and almost every combination in between, and it blooms in full hot sun without fail! If you need ideas for pots, planters,or your entire landscape we can help. Remember Jerry Harper’s team of landscape designers is ready to come out and do an evaluation of you landscape -FREE! Give us a Call and remember ol’ reliable, we’ve been doing this for 66 years! Good Growin’.

July Is A Hot Month For Gardening-Here Is Why!
Subscribe to Our Newsletter!
The bad news is it is hot. The Good News is July is almost over and Fall will soon be here!

Some gardening facts for late July: Starting this week the average temperature actually starts dropping. We can start planting pumpkins, corn, and some squash from seed . In a few weeks the list of vegetable seed varieties we can plant grows exponentially! If you haven’t applied pre emergent herbicides to prevent summer weeds, especially spurge-do it now-”dimension” works great. Spurge loves the hot humid weather and pops up from seemingly nowhere! As your summer garden wanes, start preparing the soil for fall planting as mentioned previously it isn’t too far off! Continue to mulch around trees, shrubs, roses, vegetables, etc…Your plants will love you back! Control weeds early as they compete for water, space, and nutrients with your desirable plants and they are easier to kill when young and tender. Keep your lawn fertilized every 30 days with fertilome lawn food or turf royale and be sure to mow regularly enough. Speaking of lawns, this has been a very trying summer for the transition from winter back to summer lawns. Be sure your watering system is working properly, you are fertilizing, aerating and applying gypsum or sulfur will help. If your lawn doesn’t seem to respond favorably to these techniques, we’d be glad to come out and diagnose/evaluate your situation. This is a great time to evaluate your plantings. If they look great now they’ll be fine most of the year, if they aren’t performing well and haven’t been , it may be time to consider something new. This is a fine time to plant heat loving trees ,shrubs, and vines. Come in or we’ll come out-either way we’d love to help you have the garden of your dreams!

Tip Of The WeekListen live this week to the Garden Segment of “Rosie On The House” You can hear this tip in much more detail. you may also click on the coupon, print it out and bring it in for a 20% savings on the product mentioned!

The tip this week is Nutgrass Control. This fast growing “sedge” (not really a grass) can really make a lawn look terrible and almost unusable as the tips of the plant are sharp and uncomfortable to walk on. The make up of the plant makes it hard to kill and impossible to dig up and remove, in fact you might make it worse. Hi Yield “nutsedge control” or sedgehammer work well and are safe to use in the lawn. Listen at 8am Saturday mornings on 92.3fm KTAR for this and all kinds of gardening fun and frolic!

Summer Color sweet potato vineTired of the same old choices, vinca, vinca, and vinca-add to that the die back that seems to get worse every year with it? Here is a very attractive, pretty, and cool looking option. Sweet Potato vine, comes in a few different colors which give nice contrast and they can be used alone together or with other plants. They can be used in beds, pots, or hanging baskets with great success!! Try some, i think you’ll like it!

A Sunday Surprise!

Love surprises? I do especially in the garden. The neat thing about bulbs is you often forget they are there till one day when all the conditions are right, presto there they are! We got a few sprinkles last night, don’t know if i’d call it rain but that was all it took to trigger this rain lily to pop out. There are lots of options for your summer garden and this is one of them. It doesn’t have to be drab dreary and burned up. Consider rain lilies, gazanias, sweet potato vine, lantana, lavender, ice plant, etc. Notice i didn’t mention Vinca? Enjoy your Sunday and plant a surprise! Good Growin’

Save $-Plant Something!!
According to the Arizona Republic, in 1920 when Phoenix was only 5 square miles in size, the were 100,000 trees planted here. In the 1880s they reported visitors would claim ” you couldn’t see the town because of all the trees”. Do you suppose they knew something? Well we know they didn’t have air conditioning and the 1880s probably not even electricity in most cases. So to keep cool and comfortable, they planted trees. We now have a/c and fans, and pools to keep us cool, but it can cost a lot of money. SRP and APS both report the most cost effective thing you can do to save on electric bills is to create SHADE. One of the most cost effective and certainly the “GREENEST” thing you can do to create shade is to plant trees, vines, and shrubs in the proper places around your home. Harper’s can help you decide which are the best and most effective to plant and where to plant them, we’ll even plant them for you! Give us a call today for a FREE evaluation of your landscape-new or existing. Whether you need one tree or a complete landscape design we can help you start saving money on your utility bills right away! Remember the best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago, the 2nd best time is today!

July Gardening
dust stormWell the monsoon has arrived, complete with one of the biggest dust storms ever. What does that mean for your garden?
  • We are starting to see ”slime mold” and other fungi especially in lawns. Be sure to water in the am note at night, apply dispersul, and don’t go too long between mowings, also dethatching might help as fungi like to grow in old organic matter and removing some might help.
  • Mulching-apply a layer of organic mulch around gardens, roses, fruit trees, really everything will benefit from cooler roots, more consistent moisture, and less weeds. It also looks and smells great!
  • Believe it or not, start preparing gardens for fall planting. Some varieties can be planted soon, in fact you can begin planting pumpkins now! Use lots of compost and gypsum! You can get our garden preparation guide free in store or on line at www.harpersnurseries.com
  • Be sure your trees are well staked, if they need staking at all. Trees should be double staked and there should be space between the trunk and the stakes!
  • Thin mesquites and other shade trees to allow for wind to pass through the canopy, preventing blow down and breaking.
  • All in all your plants will look and do better now with the influx of moisture in the air. You may even want to adjust watering frequency as things will not dry out as fast as in May or June.
  •
If you want to save money and create an outdoor living space that you enjoy and want to be in, call us and we’ll come out FREE. We can help you place one Tree in the proper location or design an entire garden,or living area outdoors! You’ll be amazed how livable your yard can be even in the hottest temps if it is done properly, and you can save money on that a/c bill as well! Water,Water,Water, and Water Some More!

When temperatures reach the levels we’re going to and have had over the last week or so most watering schedules are not sufficient. Please check your plants daily for sufficient moisture. It will be normal for plants to wilt in the middle of the day, so we’d suggest checking in the early morning hours. If the plants are already in wilt they will be in big trouble by the middle of the day. Concentrate on watering deeply, hours not minutes, when it comes to drip systems and don’t be afraid to override your schedule for a few days and turn the timer on manually if need be. A hint is to have an “indicator” plant in your landscape. What we mean by that is a plant that might show signs of needing water first. In the case of the nursery, we look at the cape honeysuckle and or duranta. They will tend to show a slight wilt when they need watering before any of the other plants do. A little wilt will not damage your plants if you water sufficiently and in a timely manner after it shows up. If your indicator plants show a little wilt you know the rest of the landscape probably will need watering soon anyway! So get out while it is cool and check your plants even though you have an “automatic” timer on your system. Your timer can’t  see or sense the change in the weather, unless you have one of the new “smart” timers. Gardening is a touch and feel thing and without the gardener there is no garden, your timer doesn’t care!
