Summer Is Winding Down

Do you remember the Lou Grubb Chevrolet commercial about kids going off to their first day of school? It went something like ” thousands of young people are leaving home today without any i.d. in their wallet …going out on a new adventure in life for the first time! As young people or as my old principal Walter Bright called us “kidos” head back to school please be watchful for all those brightly colored backpacks wandering along the sidewalks and crosswalks of your neighborhoods.

We are also reminded by the buzz of activity around the school yard that Summer is winding down. To gardeners that means the excitement of Fall Gardening is just about at hand. Harper’s hopes we can help you get ready to usher in the Fall Gardening season. We have received some of our garden seeds already, bulbs will begin arriving in a few weeks as will the first geranium cuttings. The first crop of fall vegetable starts have been sown. You can see we’re busy getting ready. Hope this newsletter will give you some tips on what you can be doing to get there yourself!

Radio Show Tip Of The Week

.Be sure to listen in this Saturday at 8am on 92.3fm KTAR for the Garden Hour of the Rosie On The House Show. We take calls and answer questions, but we always have a tip of the week and an associated coupon for 20% OFF on the product. This week the tip is start watching for White Fly. They will begin to appear on Hibiscus, Roses, Lantana, and newly planted vegetable plants. One of the best controls is to keep your weeds in check. Spurge is rampant now and white fly love it! Control your spurge with fertilome Weed Out. I love the Spinosad product for white fly as well as other garden pests, hi yield “systemic” granules do a great job on non edibles as well. Keep your plants well fertilized and now is a great time to do that with Organo Tree and Shrub Food or 10-10-10. A healthy plant will be able to fight of pests and stay looking good. Fertilize now while the weather is warm and before the pests have a chance to weaken the plant.growell coupon Be sure to click on the coupon and print out our web home page to get your 20% OFF any ONE Grow Well products this weekend!

Remember be care full out there and get ready to garden! Let us know how we can help. Whether is is just answering  a garden question, identifying a bug or a weed or doing a complete landscape design and installation, we can and will give you the best advice, service, and attention. With over 66 years of experience in the desert gardening and with our name on the building-we have a lot of experience and a lot at stake to make your garden be the best it can be-Good Growin’.
Sincerely,
The Harper Boys

Get Ready For Fall
  • Begin tilling in organic matter, gypsum, and organic fertilizers to your garden area. It is vitally important to have the soil well prepared before you plant new vegetables or flowers
  • Evaluate landscape plants-how did they survive the summer? Are they worth keeping or would there be better choices-We can help with this process with an “in home” evaluation.
  • How is your lawn? A lot of them have struggled this Summer due to Winter Rye grass that lived way too long. There is still time to seed Bermuda or lay new sod if necessary. One thing to consider: If you really enjoy your winter lawn, it is really the turf you have for 9 months of the year. How many of us go out and are active on our Summer lawns anyway. I personally wouldn’t get too worked up over a marginal Summer lawn-we can plant rye grass in a month or so again anyway.
  • Get ready or start fertilizing your subtropical plants including citrus now. Take advantage of the warm weather and use the fertilizer to help them recover before cold weather sets in.
  • Inspect for insects. We are still seeing lots of caterpillars, mealy bugs, and the like. If you still have eggplant, melons, peppers etc in your garden be sure to keep them bug free. This is about when we start seeing white fly show up as well. Be sure to keep your weeds in control-yes i said weeds, especially spurge, as white fly love to breed there and they multiply fast.

Breaking Garden News
cold damaged tomato

There has been a constant parade of folks into Harper’s this week with leaves from their Tomato plants that look burned (for lack of a better description) see picture. The best we can tell from consulting with Terry Mikel and John H. Harper Jr. it was last weekend’s cold weather that caused this. The plants were very soft and growing fast and the sudden cold weather was just enough to damage the tissue. By the way, Saturday was the 6th biggest difference between the actual temp and the normal temp in history! So all that being said there is not much you can do except fertilize and let the plants grow out of it!
