Feelin’ Pretty Good For 66

Actually I’m not really that old, but Harpers as an organization is. We were founded in 1945 by John and Alice Harper after John Sr’s retirement from the Phoenix Fire Department. And things have been “growing” ever since, pun completely intended. We hope you’ll help us celebrate and come by to take advantage of the extra special weekly sales we’ll have going on.  This week we start with 33% OFF on all gift certificates and 50% OFF all remaining tomatoes and geraniums. We’ll have lots of surprises throughout the month of June-stay tuned! Today also is show time in two ways. As always we’ll be hosting the 1st hour of the Rosie On The House Show on gardening and landscaping. We will, however, be broadcasting from the Phoenix Civic Plaza and the home and garden expo! Hope to see you out in the garden-I’m the one who looks pretty good for 66! Good Growin’.

June Garden Checklist
Time to feed the trees that feed you. Citrus, fruit trees, berries, grapes, etc should be fertilized this month with Organo Citrus Food.
Mulch and then mulch some more. Keep the roots of your plants cool, cut down on weeds, and use less water-need any more reasons to do it!
Protect the trunks of newly planted citrus trees, fruit trees, ficus, ash and any other tree that do not have “bark”. Use Go Natural tree paint for best results!
Start fertilizing summer lawns monthly with “All Seasons” or Fertilome lawn food!
Be sure you are adjusting your watering schedule to reflect the changing weather. Check out our website for a guide on watering and how to develop a watering schedule.Go To www.harpersnurseries.com “garden tips” “landscape watering guide for Arizona”
Check for spider mites, caterpillars, aphids, grape leaf skeletonizers…..We are seeing a lot of insects that normally would be evident earlier in the spring. Due to the cooler temps perhaps the appearance of the critters has been delayed. If you are unsure what you have, bring in samples for proper i.d. and prescribed treatment.
Be sure to follow us on facebook or check our Blog on our website for daily postings and happenings!
Be sure to listen to The Harper Garden Hour of the Rosie on the House show every Saturday morning at 8am. Tune your dial to 92.3 fm and catch the tip of the week. You can click on the coupon above to save 20% on that weeks particular product! This week we’ll be broadcasting live from the civic center and the Home and Garden expo!

Breaking Garden News
cold damaged tomato

There has been a constant parade of folks into Harper’s this week with leaves from their Tomato plants that look burned (for lack of a better description) see picture. The best we can tell from consulting with Terry Mikel and John H. Harper Jr. it was last weekend’s cold weather that caused this. The plants were very soft and growing fast and the sudden cold weather was just enough to damage the tissue. By the way, Saturday was the 6th biggest difference between the actual temp and the normal temp in history! So all that being said there is not much you can do except fertilize and let the plants grow out of it!

Did You Think Summer Was Just Around The Corner?
