Pickin’ Maters Yet?

If you planted your tomatoes in early February you might just be picking some fruit by now! If not perhaps a couple of things have gone south on you!

  • Pollination, are you getting blossoms and no fruit? If so the bees may not be doing their job. Try using a tomato or pepper set spray. They do work and are completely safe. Be sure you’re plants are in a place where some wind can get to them as well!
  • You may be getting fruit but they have an ugly black patch on the bottom of them? We are starting to see “blossom end rot” on tomatoes. This is generally a calcium deficiency, but stress from irregular watering and fertilizing may add to the trouble. Fertilome makes a spray ” yield booster and blossom end rot preventer” it is worth a try! Many people throw the tomatoes away when this happens as well. You can cut off the damage and still use the fruit!
  • Fertilize,Fertilize,Fertilize….Tomatoes as well as other “annuals” need to grow fast and keep growing until they are “done”. Be sure you are fertilizing regularly. Follow directions on the product you’re using, most folks don’t use the product nearly as frequently as they need to and using more is not good. Better to feed lightly and often than risk overfeeding and burning plants!
  • Water,Mulch,Shade: as the temps warm up be sure to adjust your watering schedule, don’t panic, however, if plants wilt in the heat of the afternoon. Adding a layer of compost or mulch to the ground around your plants will help them cool off as well. If you really want to extend the season build a shade structure over your garden. Don’t use cloth more dense than about 50% and be sure it doesn’t  touch the plants!!
  • Birds-Dang em’. Using a netting or chicken wire is really about the only effective solution!

Do We Have Enough Trees???

Early Phoenix was lined and fed with a network of canals delivering water to a once barren desert floor. Lining the canals and early streets were thousands of trees. Trees provided the first “air conditioning” to early Phoenix dwellers. Folks in the late 1800s and the early part of the 20th century didn’t take shade for granted-do you? Trees and properly placed plants can save you hundreds of dollars on utility bills, create a great place for a pic nic or nap, enhance the value of your home, and just make it a whole lot nicer place to live!

Arbor Day is tomorrow, Friday April 27th. Celebrate by “just planting something”. A tree for more shade, a pot for curb appeal , a flowering shrub for beauty……don’t just stand there-”plant something” Click on the picture below for more reasons to plant from our friends at APS.  Harper’s will also make it worth your while thru the end of the month:

Harper’s Weekly Tip: Too Much Leaf Drop?

If you have any amount of trees or shrubs in your yard you have probably noticed, especially with the wind we’ve been having, a lot of leaves turning yellow and falling to the ground. Some Springs seem to be more significant than others, but it is very common for citrus, oleander, hibiscus, orchid, live oak, jacaranda….to slough off lots of foliage as they begin to bloom and put on a flush of new spring growth. This process must happen for “evergreen” trees and shrubs at some point during the growing season, some do it throughout, in order for old growth to be replaced by new. I can tell you that my back patio is a mess with citrus blossoms and leaves right now! The flip side is ,however, is my citrus trees are the prettiest now of any time of year. There is nothing like that shiny new green foliage as it envelops the whole canopy of the tree. Making sure your trees and shrubs are properly fertilized will minimize this process and insure that new growth comes on fast and full. We recommend Organo and Fertilome brand fertilizers. They are developed for our growing conditions and have formulas that best suite how we plant here in the desert.

Be sure to tune in Saturday at 8am to 92.3fm KTAR to hear more about this tip and other products. As always if you print off the coupon you can bring it in for a 20% discount on any one Gro Well product at Harper’s! Good Growin’

Wednesday Winners & Ladies/Sr’s Day-Everyone Is Winning!!

We had two correct guesses at our plant trivia yesterday. Bilbergia nutans or “queen’s tears” was the name of the plant. It is a bromeliad and does very well here in slightly shaded areas or indoors with good light. I have one in an atrium area and it does well with much neglect there.
