New roses have arrived at the nursery and if you have existing roses this can be a hard call-when to prune? Your rose bushes may be the prettiest they’ve been all year, however if you don’t prune them back, they won’t be next year. Planting roses is not necessarily the mystery it used to be. Most nurseries now carry potted roses which are much easier and much less worrisome then “bare root” roses. The plants are established in the container just like any landscape plant should be and transplanting should be a snap. Of course you need to plant properly: “dig a $10 hole for a $5 plant” the old timers used to say! Roses like good rich soil so using a mixture of 50% compost w/ native soil is a must. Harper’s recommends using gypsum and slow release fertilizer at the time of planting as well.
